XploR Cane

Students at Birmingham City University recently unveiled a cane that has built-in facial recognition software, allowing a visually impaired person to recognise a friend or family member up to 33 feet away. The XploR cane has an SD card fitted into the cane itself, loaded with images of people that the user of the cane knows. A camera scans faces that come into view and compares them to the database of pictures on the SD card. When there's a match the cane vibrates, and Bluetooth connects the cane to an audio device in the ear, which gives the user step-by-step directions, aided by built-in GPS. It isn't available yet--the researchers plan to do more testing of the device this year, optimising the cane so that it is both easy to use and lightweight. This isn't the first team to try to update the white cane into a more active guide. Researchers at the University of Arkansas, United States recently developed a cane that can guide people around obstacles also using audio instructions connected by Bluetooth.

Volunteer At SITE

You can make a real difference in SITE’s work by volunteering your time, expertise, and ideas. From serving as a technology champion, to participating in a focus group, greeting visitors, or helping out at events—there are many ways for you to get involved and help us expand opportunities for people living with sight loss! Volunteers compliment the work of SITE; we have a range of opportunities such as: • Support at training events and workshops • Help at fundraising events • Technology Testers and trainers. We are looking for people who have some free time, the amount you can give is entirely up to you as we have a variety of roles that can suit any time commitment.  Volunteers are at the heart of our work and essential to the success of many of our activities and services.  Some areas where they are currently involved are listed below: • Providing admin and clerical support • Helping at fundraising events • Assisting in our resource centre • Driving for our clients What's in it for You? The work of the volunteers is reciprocal as there are many observable benefits.  As well as offering a most rewarding way to make a positive difference to others, volunteers can: • Learn new skills • Make new friends • Keep busy • Have fun • Build confidence • Give something back • Gain work experience • Enhance your CV Our volunteers undergo an Induction Training and a Visual Awareness Training Course which gives them an insight into the work, information on the various sight loss conditions and how these affect our clients, together with hands-on experience of guiding etc.  We don't expect people to be experts in their chosen activity as we offer training specific to the chosen tasks. What Next? If you are considering joining our team of volunteers, we would be delighted to hear from you.  And we are sure we could find an opportunity to suit you. If you would like to have an informal chat about our volunteer opportunities then give John a call on 0141 332 0983. We look forward to hearing from you.
